School Governors

Who are we?

David Stickels - Chair

David began life as a teacher moving through the Educational structures finishing as a Principal Education officer for Gloucestershire County Council. He moved from the Education system into the charity sector where he was CEO of 3 National charities before setting up his own business as a charity consultant specialising in Business and Event Management.
He lives in Berrow with his wife Julie who was also a teacher. His 3 children have all entered the teaching profession and 2 of his grandchildren attend local schools.

James Peate - Head Teacher

My name is James Peate and I have been the Headteacher of West Huntspill and East Huntspill Primary Schools since 2010. I started teaching in London in 1981 and I have been a Headteacher at four different schools in Somerset for the past 23 years.

My key responsibilities to the governing body are:

  • Advising on, and implementing, the governing body’s strategic vision
  • Along with other staff, being accountable to the governing body for the schools’ performance
  • Responsible to the governing body for the standards of teaching and ensuring that proper standards of professional performance are established and maintained
  • Drawing up and submitting to the governing body an annual development plan

Caroline Cheer - Clerk

Jo Bryant - Co-opted
My name is Jo Bryant, I am a co-opted governor and also the vice-chair. I have been a governor for 7 years, originally as a parent governor, as both my children attended West Huntspill school.

I am the Manager of the under fives group at West Huntspill and have worked there for 16 years.
I live in west Huntspill with my Husband and two (now teenage!) children and a variety of animals.
I enjoy the responsibility of being a governor and working towards good outcomes for all the children across the federation.

John Micklewright - Co-opted

In 2013, I became the Chair of the Huntspill Federation but stood down in 2016 due to work commitments.  I am currently the Counter Fraud Manager for an NHS Audit Consortium working in the South West, previously a Senior Audit Manager at Deloitte and Mazars working mainly with the public sector organisations including Further and Higher Education.
Whilst my skills in audit have been valuable as a Governor, I would encourage ANYONE to contact the Federation if they would like to become a Governor.  We do have vacancies.  The main requirements are: common sense, a desire to see children get the best start to education as they are the future workforce, a couple of spare hours over a few weeks and common sense.  Yes I know I have repeated myself but I must emphasise that anyone can be a governor.
I am married to Margaret (a Scottish artist) and have two wonderful children, Andrew (21) & Katie (16).  In my spare time I like walking my dog, Dash, and volunteer with the National Trust as a roving ranger visiting countryside sites such as Glastonbury Tor and Brean Down to talk to visitors, mend fences and pick up litter.

Judith Eyres - Co-opted

Tina Lukins - Co-opted

Emily Bott - Staff

I am the Foundation Stage/Key Stage One teacher at East Huntspill School.  I have worked there for many years now and am responsible for co-ordinating Computing across the federation.  Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my family, having two young children keeps me very busy!  My hobbies include keeping fit, sewing and watching films/series.

Donna Prout - Elected Parent

My name is Donna Prout and I am a parent governor for the Huntspill Federation with 1 child in year 5 at West Huntspill School and another who has now moved on to King Alfred School. I am part of the West Huntspill PTA which I joined in 2008 and I was active in school as a volunteer until 2013 when I returned to work. I chose to become a governor in order to extend my role in school life; helping the Federation achieve their goals and to enable the best possible outcomes for the children of both schools.

Marie-Claire Ladd - Elected Parent

My name is Marie-Claire Ladd. I am French and I live at West Huntspill for 6 years. My son Antony is attending West Huntspill School.

I am working at Playgroup (West Huntspill Under Fives Group) and should complete my Level 2 Certificate for the Children and Young People's Workforce by July 2017.

I have previously worked at West Huntspill School as a MDSA.

I am a volunteer in West Huntspill school and Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge Sea Cadets.

I would like to play a role in the life of the school to make a positive contribution as it is a valuable asset for the community."

Message from our Governors

Welcome to the Governors’ section!

The governing body is responsible for managing both East and West Huntspill Primary Schools which includes monitoring the schools’ budget, setting and reviewing school policies and appointing staff. It is also responsible for implementing the National Curriculum and for monitoring the condition of the school premises and health and safety. The Governing Body splits these responsibilities across 3 sub committees who meet at least once per term. The sub committees are:

  • Business (includes Finance, Personnel, Premises and Health & Safety)
  • Teaching and Learning
  • Welfare

The full Governing body meet twice per term and the minutes are available for inspection (unless they have been declared confidential) from the school office.

Governors visit the school on a regular basis to celebrate the learning and achievements of all the children.
