Welcome to Hawthorn Class

The children in Hawthorn Class are Reception and Year 1.

In Hawthorn Class our teacher is Mrs Bott, who is supported by teaching assistants Mrs Neale, Mrs Ladd and Mrs Cozens throughout the week.

This year we have 16 children in Hawthorn Class.

We love to learn in our classroom and the spacious, adjoining outdoor area.

We use our outside area every day and enjoy spending time exploring in our garden.

Spring Term 2023

This term our learning theme is 'What could it be made of?' We will be reading a variety of different texts, including The Three Little Pigs, The True Story of the Three Little Pigs, Traction man and Cinderella. Our class readers this term will include 'Flat Stanley', 'Paper dolls', 'What we'll build', 'Mr Wolf's Pancakes', 'The Elves and the Shoemaker', 'The Smartest Giant in town' and 'The Toy Museum'.

We will continue to develop our knowledge of phonics using Read Write Inc and this will help support our reading skills.  The children will learn weekly spellings in school using 'Spelling shed'.  The children will be set weekly assignments which they can access at home too.

In Maths we will be learning mathematical concepts using the NCETM Mastering Number to support our teaching. The children will be learning about numbers in fun and exciting ways with the 'Numberblocks' characters.

In Science we will be using our investigative skills by asking questions, designing tests and carrying them out and then evaluating and talking about what we have found out.  Our focus this term is 'Everday materials'.  The children will learn to name a variety of materials and talk about their properties.

In PSHE our topics are ‘Dreams and Goals' and 'Healthy Me'. We will be talking about our dreams and goals and exploring ways to be healthy.

In Computing we will be learning how to program 'Bee Bot' our programmable robot.  The children will explore data handling.  Online safety is a focus every term but in addition to our usual termly online saftey lessons, the children will participate in 'Safer internet day'.

In RE we will be learning about God, thinking about what some people believe God looks like and what God's job is. We will be learning about toys in History.  As part of this learning, the children will be bringing in special toys from home.  They will be asking parents and Grandparents questions about their toys when they were a child.  The children will explore the differences and similarities between toys in the past and toys nowadays.

In PE, the children will be developing their gymnastics skills.  They will be using the equipment indoors to demonstrate the skills that they have learnt.  We follow the Real PE scheme of work for our PE sessions.

In art, we will be exploring different materials such a clay, playdough and plasticine.  We will design animals and use different materials to make them.  The children will evaluate their own work.

In Design and Technology, the children will explore materials further, as they design and make a boat that floats.

In Muisc, the children will explore pitch and tempo through a 'Superheroes' themed unit of work.

In outdoor learning, the children will be designing and making homes for the three little pigs, they will explore making art with natural materials and mixing their own paint using materials we find in the outdoor area.

Look at our learning!

Our visits and visitors

We visited Maundril's farm on a very snowy day.  The children had lots of fun exploring the farm, learning about bees and cows and planting potatoes.  We talked about the different trees and looked for human and physical features on the farm.  We really enjoyed our visit  and learnt so much about the farm.
